The shelf of graphic novels is probably one of the more modern additions to your local library or bookstore. While some still view graphic novels with skepticism, many educators and literacy advocates believe they are a valuable tool for young readers. Graphic novels offer a unique and powerful way to engage readers, specifically for those who might struggle with traditional texts.

The combination of images and words assists with reading comprehension, helping readers visualize the story while keeping them entertained. This fusion of visual and textual storytelling makes complex ideas more accessible which can inspire a love for reading in students.

Beyond the classroom, graphic novels play a significant role of developing a love of reading among more reluctant or intimidated readers.  Despite the typically light-hearted images, the storylines of the texts can be complex. “Best-selling series and titles like Dog Man; Baby-sitters Club; Smile; Hey Kiddo; and Twins, have been captivating readers of all levels and interests for almost two decades.”

As graphic novels become more popular, the narratives have become more diverse. The different genres of graphic novels offers something for everyone and allows students with different preferences to find something they would enjoy. The various narratives of graphic novels can also give them the opportunity to explore a different type of story that they might have otherwise not been exposed to.

Ultimately, graphic novels should be celebrated and used as a tool to enrich literacy and imagination. They offer readers of all ages and abilities the opportunity to explore new worlds, grapple with complex ideas, and grow as learners–all while making the process of reading more enjoyable and accessible.

Through donations, the Maryland Book Bank has been able to create shelf dedicated to graphic novels. Available through our facility and Bookmobile visits, we believe that graphic novels are valuable as young readers start and continue their reading journeys.
