Making Room for Wellness: Volunteering During Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! Raising awareness for mental health allows us to pave the pathway that will break the stigma surrounding mental illnesses. This month, it is not only important to advocate for others, but for yourself too. Volunteering can be a great way to practice wellness by helping others. Here at the Maryland Book Bank, our volunteers help their community and know that their efforts will positively impact the youth and educators in Maryland. Spending some time at the Maryland Book Bank is as good for the volunteer as it is for the recipients of the books as volunteers are able to engage in something that they see as bigger than themselves. From a scientific perspective, the Cleveland Clinic explains that when you help other people, it activates the reward center in your brain and releases serotonin, dopamine and endorphins. Additionally, volunteering can be stress-reducing due to the feelings of purpose and appreciation that comes with spending your time helping others. Our volunteers at the Maryland Book Bank always leave with smiles on their faces, a new appreciation for books, and a deeper love for our community.

To volunteer, you simply have to sign up through the volunteer tab on our website which you can find here! We offer a relaxed and fun environment where you will be sorting and organizing the books that we receive through generous donations.  Our volunteers serve a vital role in what we do because when the books are sorted, they are able to be shelved. This allows students and educators to have access to a wider variety of books, opening more opportunities for learning while developing a love for reading. Volunteer with us and make a difference, we hope to see you soon!
