Revamp and Refresh: Updating Book Covers to Increase Engagement

Breathing new life into the covers of older titles can captivate younger readers, rekindling their curiosity and deepening their engagement with the series. Titles such as Nancy Drew, The Boxcar Children, and The Baby-Sitters Club are all older titles that are still popular and heavily circulated today.

A book’s cover is the very first thing a reader sees when they browse through hundreds of books on a shelf. A colorful and engaging cover helps a book stand out among the other selections. Book covers offer importance because they:

·      Establish the reader’s first impression of the book

·      Help the book stand out on a crowded shelf

·      Communicate important information about the book’s content and genre

·      Pique the reader’s curiosity and encourages them to pick up the book

·      Create a unifying brand for an author or series

When publishers decide on a re-design, certain aspects of the cover become a priority in order to make the biggest impact to the broadest audience. Titles, font, color scheme, imagery/symbolism, and spine design are all key when going through a book cover refresh.  These characteristics of design have the ability to make or break whether or not someone picks up the book. Although the original look of the book may have been great, trends change, and people become attracted to different things. It is important for publishing companies to be able to keep up with the times in order to keep their books circulating.

Part of these evolving trends has to do with the development of technology and basic resources that are now available in comparison to books published decades ago. Covers are updated with new resources so that the older titles can measure up with the new releases. Updating the covers of older book series allows a new generation of readers to experience the classics. If we are being honest, we all judge books by their covers and the publishers know it. Redesigning and updating covers attract newer readers while keeping the classic stories and series popular.
