September is National Literacy Month! This means it is the perfect time to reflect on the vital role that literacy plays in our lives and the impact that it has in our communities. But what is literacy?
Being literate goes beyond simply knowing how to read and write. There are various types of literacy, such as financial literacy, digital literacy, health literacy, and more. Literacy encompasses the ability to interpret, comprehend, and draw conclusions from different types of information. Many of us take these skills for granted––we easily read menus, understand street signs, and buy the correct medication for our symptoms. It is difficult to imagine what everyday life would be like without these abilities. Unfortunately, this is the reality for many members of our community here in Baltimore.
Illiteracy not only affects individuals, but also hinders the development of entire communities. Lower literacy rates often lead to reduced civic engagement. Fewer voices are heard, making it harder for communities to evolve and address important social, economic, and political challenges. Every voice matters when tackling issues both large and small, but those struggling with literacy may find it difficult to form opinions or participate in meaningful discussions that create change. A higher literacy rate leads to a more informed and engaged community.
Literacy challenges can be best addressed during the developing years of childhood. It is easier to build these skills early on than to address them later in life.
This is where organizations like the Maryland Book Bank step in, offering invaluable support in fostering literacy at a young age without a financial burden.
Through the diverse collection of books suitable for various reading levels, the Maryland Book Bank offers a valuable resource for students, parents, and educators. Our efforts help to combat Maryland’s s by giving children the tools they need to grow, learn, and thrive. Each book has the potential to open a new world for its reader, and through literacy, we can help transform our community for the better.
